My hometown, Fukuyama.

Fukuyama Castle is right behind Fukuyama Station. You can even see the castle walls and historic turrets from the train platform.

The castle was originally built in 1622. The current main tower was rebuilt in 1966 and renovated in 2022, together with its museum. One unique feature is the iron-covered north side of the tower — the only one of its kind in Japan.

If you’re traveling to Hiroshima, come and explore Fukuyama too. I’d love to show you Tomonoura, a historic port town with beautiful old streets.

And before catching your train, don’t forget to stop by Fukuyama Castle!

Take the ropeway up and enjoy beautiful views of the oyster farms and islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
It’s worth the trip up!

Just beside Hiroshima Station.
A little glimpse of everyday Hiroshima.

After the cherry blossoms fade, fresh green maple leaves fill Shukkeien Garden.

By September, the bright green of May has deepened into the green of late summer, but I still find myself admiring its beauty as I walk through the garden.

The full autumn colors are still a long way off, though a few leaves here and there are just beginning to change.

The first photo shows the view worshippers once saw as they approached Miyajima by boat.

One of the charms of the great torii gate is that it looks different every day—and even from hour to hour—with the tides and weather.

A little family road trip around Lake Biwa in August.

Five days of beautiful places, good food, and slow summer days. We also enjoyed a 90-minute cruise on Lake Biwa, with a quick stop in Kyoto too!

And of course, my favorite Baumkuchen at La Collina!

Discover Tomonoura — a hidden gem in Hiroshima.

A historic port town overlooking the beautiful Seto Inland Sea, with traditional streets, old houses, peaceful temples, and beautiful views.

Tomonoura is also known as one of the places that inspired Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo.

I was born and raised in Fukuyama, and Tomonoura is one of the places I love introducing to visitors from around the world.

Explore Tomonoura with a private local guide and discover a quieter, more local side of Hiroshima.

August 6. This year, I once again attended the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony.

As someone born and raised in Hiroshima, August 6 is a special day for me. At 8:15 a.m., I joined the moment of silence in remembrance of those who lost their lives.

After the ceremony, I attended an English testimony by an A-bomb survivor, followed by a discussion with people from different countries and generations. It is always a meaningful experience.

This year marks 81 years since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

The average age of A-bomb survivors is now 86. The opportunity to hear their stories firsthand will not last forever.

There is something each of us can do.
The first step is to learn, to listen, and never forget.
