Tomonoura

Tomonoura is a historic port town at the southern tip of Fukuyama City, overlooking the serene waters of the Seto Inland Sea. With its Edo-period streets, merchant houses, and temples, the town preserves a timeless atmosphere. Its picturesque harbor and cultural heritage have inspired filmmakers worldwide, most famously Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo on the Cliff. Blending maritime history, charming streets, and coastal beauty, Tomonoura offers a unique glimpse into Japan’s past and a peaceful escape from modern life.

Taichoro
Part of Fukuzenji Temple, this hall was built in the late 17th century as a reception space for visiting envoys. Korean envoys especially admired its view of the Seto Inland Sea, calling it one of the most beautiful views east of Korea.

Ota Family Residence
This important cultural property belonged to a prosperous merchant family that brewed Homeishu, a traditional medicinal liquor, for over 350 years. The residence reflects the wealth and influence of Edo-period merchants.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Spots
Tomonoura also offers off-the-beaten-path spots with breathtaking coastal scenery, such as Io-ji Temple, which provides panoramic views of both the town and the sea.

Fukuyama Castle

Fukuyama Castle, originally built in the early 1600s, is located right next to Fukuyama Station. From the Shinkansen platform on the third floor, the main keep is visible directly in front, making it the closest castle to a station in all of Japan.

Reopened in August 2022 after major renovations, the castle’s exterior now features a restored northern side with unique iron plating—a national rarity—creating a striking white-and-black appearance. Inside the five-story keep, the museum showcases samurai armor, weapons, and historical artifacts, along with interactive digital exhibits and a large theater for an engaging experience. From the top floor, visitors can step outside and enjoy panoramic views of Fukuyama City.

The surrounding Fukuyama Castle Park is especially beautiful in spring, when over 300 cherry trees bloom, making it one of the city’s top spots for hanami (cherry blossom viewing). Several original gates and turrets remain as Important Cultural Properties, enhancing the castle’s historic atmosphere.

Abuto Kannon

Abuto Kannon is a striking vermilion temple perched on a cliff, about a 10-minute taxi ride from Tomonoura. Built around 1570, it is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. The temple is renowned as a place for prayers for safe voyages, fertility, and childbirth. The cliffside location offers sweeping views of the sea and coastline, creating a truly unforgettable panorama.

Fukuyama Auto & Clock Museum

Just a 12-minute walk from JR Fukuyama Station, the Fukuyama Auto & Clock Museum is an interactive space where visitors can see, touch, photograph, and even ride in a selection of classic vehicles. The museum features classic cars from both Japan and abroad, including a 1915 Model T Ford Speedster and vintage Datsuns. This unique museum offers a hands-on experience that brings the history of automobiles and clocks to life.
